Question by ~ ☼ Zaiden’s Mommy ☼ ~: What is a safe towing weight for a 2004 Nissan Xterra?
My parents are going out of town for a camping trip and are planning on towing a camper (approx. 2800 lbs.). Their only towing vehicle (1998 Plymouth Grand Voyager) was totalled in a accident on Sunday morning and so my boyfriend offered his ’04 Xterra for them to drive. He is concerned, though, about the weight of the camper. He towed a “medium-sized Uhaul” when he moved about 2 years ago and said it almost ruined his power steering. We looked up towing capacity and it should be safe but I would like to know for sure. Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by 2cutekiddos
If your car manual says that it is safe, then it was tested for that weight and it is safe.

Question by Gossimer: How do you start a towing business that focuses on semi truck’s?
I have a body shop and towing service and we have recently started towing for Roadside Assistance companies. I would like to expand my services to inclued semi trucks but before I invest in the equipment, I would like a little direction about how to get these companies to put me on as their towing provider. And if there’s any money in it (the equipment is not cheap!)

Best answer:

Answer by Brenda M
yes ~ there are profits in that business; the price of the equipment is quite high as you know and also consideration of oil and gas prices is a consideration.

If you qualify to get listed with (say) the large service companies that service people all across the nation you’d be called when a service was needed in your area ~ the large roadside assist companies ~ Automobile Associations that sell memberships to their clients guaranteeing roadside assistance. There are many other things you can do; yet, this is a start.

Question by Banga: How can a towing company sell a car without a title?
My mother’s car was towed away because my loser brother had it and got arrested. She did not have enough money to get it out of the towing company. The company said they will be selling the car. She still owes money to the finance company. How can they sell a car without the title?

Best answer:

Answer by xx_satanic_mechanic_xx
they send a notice of lien and intent to sell to you and the bank. Depending on the state, you and the finance company will have a specific period of time to pay the tow and storage fees and get the car back. If you do not, the tow company will sell the car on lien papers. the state will issue a clear title to the new owner, since both you and the bank waived your rights to the car. The bank will then sue you for the balance remaining on the contract.

Have fun!

Question by coastiewife: auto repair?
We have a 2000 saturn sc, unfortunately when we recently took it in to get the alignment fixed we found out that it has a bent frame and the alignment repair could not be completed. The tire shop suggested we take it to a body shop for repair. My husband had a bit of an oops on a patch of ice back in february and we had no idea the frame was bent because there wasn’t any body damage. We can’t claim it on insurance(long story). Can anyone give me an idea, just a ballpark figure of what this “might” cost to fix? I know it’ll depend on the extent of the damage but any ideas or experiences would be helpful. I don’t want to faint when we get our real repair estimate.
my insurance isn’t refussing to pay for it, we can’t file a claim because the car wasn’t on our policy at the timne, it was on my parents because they still legally owned the car at the time but its on ours now and we have the title. its just one of those situations

Best answer:

Answer by paul s
Take it to a really good repair shop — even if your insurance won’t pay, ask them for their recommendation. That shop will anchor your frame all around, use lasers, etc. to see how far off the frame is, and use hydraulics to push and pull the frame back to the right shape. My guess is that unless it is tremendously out of whack, they will do it for about $ 1000

I had my car repossessed yesterday morning, it is a 2006 VW Jetta. I noticed that when the wrecker towed my car, he left tire marks in my yard. I am not sure if he had a master key or not, but i was wondering if he damaged my car by towing it by the back wheels. Someone told me that you can mess up the transmission by towing it by the back wheels, since it is a front wheel driven car. Can someone verify or debunk this for me.

Best answer:

Answer by wise old sage
yes towing it with the front wheels down could do damage
to an automatic transmission, but hey it’s not your car anymore.

Question by Gorudu: How do I fix a dashboard light on my 1994 Chevy Blazer?
The light that brightens my speedometer and fuel gauges has went out. Are there any quick fixes to this so I can see how fast I’m going at night? Or do I have to remove the dashboard and replace the bulb? And if so, how do I remove the dash when the steering wheel is in the way? I’m not very good with cars, and this is my first one, so any help is greatly appreciated… Thank you!

Answer by Cliff
if you lost just a single bulb in the dash, you need to replace the bulb. you’ll need to open up the dash to get to it, but its easier then you think to do so.
just be patient and consider the fact that if it doesnt come loose easily, there is still a screw hiding from you.
you shouldnt need to removed the wheel, or shifter. but you may need to tilt the wheel and have the shifter in something other then park.

if you lost all dash lights, its a fuse or switch.

What fuse do I look at? I am not exactly a car-literate. What fuse is it? Amperage and all.

Answer by thebax2006
I’ve seen more dash light rheostats turned off by mistake then blown fuses. I’ve also had several Eclipses that must have had a voltage surge and all 5 dash bulbs for illuminating the gauges burn out at the same time. Check all the fuses under the drivers foot area fuse box, one at a time. Next I’d pull the dash. Remove the bezel screws and then the 4 screws holding the cluster to the body. The larger bulb holders are the ones you’re after.
