Is auto repair shop auto-repair shops required to submit all repairs to carfax?

Question by Jenica Dianne: Is auto repair shop auto-repair shops required to submit all repairs to carfax?
I’m mainly wondering if auto-repair shops are required to submit all repairs to carfax. Are all repairs from auto-body shops are supposed to be reported? What is reported and what isn’t. If someone has a dent removed from a car door and fixed at a repair shop, is it reported? Is it against the law if they don’t report it?

People have body work done all the time that doesn’t get reported to CarFax. If a police report is never filed and nothing has been reported to the manufacturer from work done at dealership under warranty, odds are that CarFax won’t konw about it.

    Hope this helps.

    No.

Auto repair shops, insurance companies etc are not required to submit information to Car Fax. About the only ones that do are dealerships. If you go to an independent shop – it won’t be reported to Car Fax.

The thing to remember, Car Fax is a for profit company. They are not a government agency. They collect information and sell it.

Why would a company, such as a repair shop or insurance company, give their customers data away so someone else can sell it and make money? Most don’t. They are not going to violate their customers trust so another company can make a buck.
